Let’s be real - a majority of most of our houses aren’t exactly oases of bright sunshine 24/7. The blackout curtains in your bedroom and ever-drawn blinds in your living room don’t exactly create the ideal environment for a sun-loving houseplant. Thankfully, you don’t need a green thumb or an abundance of sunlight to foster healthy plants. All you need is a willingness to make them grow! No matter your aesthetic or expertise in plant care, there’s quite a variety of plants for you to choose from that thrive in low light. Read on for our top picks:

Dumb Canes

Silly name aside, the dumb cane is a beautiful and easy to care for plant for those parts of your home with less than abundant sunshine. As you can see, the leaf colors range from dark green to light green and white. While this plant doesn’t need direct sunlight, it does need consistent indirect bright light. So, consider placing it behind a curtain or away from a window. As far as watering goes, the Dumb Cane likes to be watered well then left alone to dry out. If only everything in life was this low maintenance!

Calatheas

This textured, vibrant plant does incredibly well in a dimly lit room. Calatheas are native to the tropical Americas, hence their decorative leaves and eye-catching appearance. In nature, calatheas are aptly found in jungles and at the base of trees, trying to escape the sunlight. Their popularity stems from their lovely appearance, low maintenance, and effortlessly ability to liven up any space. All calatheas need are mild temperatures, a bit of humidity (something there’s no shortage of in Charleston), and little watering and sunlight!

Dragon Tree

With structured leaves that resemble a palm tree, this plant makes for the perfect quirky addition to the office or other room that needs some pep. They’re slow-growing and easy to keep alive, but direct sunlight will actually damage the leaves on your dragon tree, so be sure to keep it in the shade. If you’re looking to add a tropical or island vibe to your space without much work, consider picking up a dragon tree!

Snake Plant

The snake plant, also referred to as mother-in-law’s tongue, might sound scary, but is actually a popular houseplant in many homes! Growing from between 8 inches to 12 feet tall, the snake plant has attractive, slender leaves that are known to clean the toxins in the air, thanks to NASA research. To take care of these guys, just keep them out of direct sunlight and don’t overwater them. Easy as can be!

Peace Lily

While not actually a true lily, this lovely flowering plant adds the perfect calming touch to any space. It needs little water and prefers bright, indirect sunlight. Primarily native to the rainforest floors in tropical America, the peace lily manages well in dark offices and bedrooms. Plus, the beautiful white blooms last for months!
